Protests against Kazakhstan's presidential election lead to violence in the capital

Kazakhstan’s first president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, has stepped down after a nearly three-decade-long tenure.

His successor, Kassym Jomart-Tokayev, confirmed his position after taking nearly 71% of the vote in Sunday’s election against six other government-approved candidates, according to Foreign Policy. His closest opposition candidate trailed behind with 16.2%.

Though that may seem a sweeping victory for Jomart-Tokayev, the transfer of office has spurred unrest in the country’s capital Nur-Sultan and largest city Almaty.

About 500 protesters were arrested by police, the BBC reported, citing local officials. The demonstration, decrying what protests called a “dictatorship” in the country, is the largest Kazakhstan has seen in recent years.

As protest is not tolerated in the country, the demonstration led to violence in the streets. A BBC correspondent in Nur-Sultan reported people being dragged onto buses by riot police. Many journalists were also detained covering the protest, while social media platforms such as Facebook and Telegram were reportedly inaccessible in the country during that time.

French ‘Yellow Vests’ gather in Paris for tenth weekend of protests

“Yellow Vest” demonstrators gathered in the French capital on Saturday for their tenth consecutive weekend of protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s government. The protests began in mid-November over higher fuel taxes, which were subsequently scrapped, and have since morphed into a broader demonstration against the government. December’s protests brought some of the worst violence seen in decades in Paris, as rioters burned cars and damaged shops and businesses. Protests so far this month

French 'Yellow Vests' gather in Paris for tenth weekend of protests

“Yellow Vest” demonstrators gathered in the French capital on Saturday for their tenth consecutive weekend of protests against President Emmanuel Macron’s government.

Protesters started to assemble by the Champs Elysees and the Invalides esplanade near the Assemblee Nationale lower house of parliament and the Eiffel Tower, with their numbers expected to increase during the day.

The protests began in mid-November over higher fuel taxes, which were subsequently scrapped, and have since morphed into a broader demonstration against the government.

December’s protests brought some of the worst violence seen in decades in Paris, as rioters burned cars and damaged shops and businesses.

Protests so far this month have not had the same level of trouble, although images of a former French boxing champion punching and kicking police during a demonstration this month in Paris shocked much of France.

Macron has launched a series of national debates to help quell the mood of public discontent and restore his standing.

Elon Musk unveils Boring Company tunnel, promising a new era in high-speed transportation

With a modified Tesla Model X zipping through a Boring Company tunnel Tuesday night, Elon Musk took the wraps off his vision of a high-speed tunnel system he believes could ease congestion and revolutionize how millions of commuters get around cities.

“I thought it was epic,” said Musk as he described how he felt being whisked through the Boring Co.’s demonstration tunnel. “For me it was an epiphany, like ‘this thing damn well worked.'”

Musk, who founded the Boring Co. two years ago after complaining that traffic in Los Angeles was driving him “nuts,” says the demonstration tunnel cost approximately $10 million to complete. Engineers and workers have been boring the 1.14-mile-long tunnel underneath one of the main streets in Hawthorne, California. One end of the tunnel starts in a parking lot owned by Musk’s Space X. The other end of the demonstration tunnel is in a neighborhood about a mile away in Hawthorne.

During his Tuesday evening presentation, Musk described the Boring Co.’s tunnels as “an actual solution to the soul-crushing burden of traffic,” laying out the ways they could be integrated into cities to one day make transportation faster and easier.

Tuesday afternoon, the Boring Co. gave reporters demonstration rides through the tunnel in modified Tesla Model X SUVs, going between 40 and 50 miles per hour. Engineers have attached deployable alignment wheels to the two front wheels of the Model X. Those alignment wheels stick out to the side of the main wheels and act as a bumper along the track walls inside the tunnel, keeping the Model X on course and preventing the vehicle from running into the side walls of the tunnel.

Hyundai's autonomous truck just made a 40-kilometer trip on a South Korean highway

The first journey by an autonomous truck on a highway in South Korea has taken place, the Hyundai Motor Company said Wednesday.

The auto firm’s Xcient truck, which has a maximum load capacity of 40 tons, drove around 40 kilometers between Uiwang and Incheon.

The vehicle made its trip Tuesday and used an autonomous driving system. This allowed it to accelerate, decelerate, steer and maneuver through traffic without needing input from a human. A human driver was, however, on board to take control as and when required.

“This successful demonstration proves that innovative autonomous driving technology can be used to transform the trade logistics industry,” Maik Ziegler, director of the Commercial Vehicle R&D Strategy Group at the Hyundai Motor Company, said in a statement.

South Korea’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport issued Hyundai with a temporary autonomous driving license for the demonstration. This represented the first time that a heavy-duty truck had been given such a license, Hyundai said.

During the demonstration, the truck traveled 40 kilometers in one hour. Hyundai said that further “autonomous navigation technology tests” were being planned for the future.
