Stocks struggle as tech decline outweighs strong quarterly earnings

Stocks traded along the flatline on Wednesday as a decline in technology stocks offset strong quarterly earnings from some of the biggest U.S. companies.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose just 31 points, with Walgreens Boots Alliance outperforming. The S&P 500 traded slightly above breakeven as industrials rose 0.8 percent. The Nasdaq Composite slipped 0.15 percent.

Shares of Alphabet fell 0.3 percent after the European Union fined Google $5 billion over antitrust abuse. Netflix fell 0.7 percent, slipping for the second day in a row after posting weaker-than-expected subscriber growth for the previous quarter. Amazon shares fell 0.1 percent after Prime Day concluded.

Tech’s decline comes in the middle of the latest corporate earnings season. Morgan Stanley reported better-than-expected earnings and revenue for the previous quarter, boosted by strong trading and investment banking revenue. The bank’s stock rose more than 3.3 percent.

Transports CSX and United Continental also posted stronger-than-forecast profits and sales, sending their shares higher by 5.6 percent and 8 percent, respectively.

American Express, eBay and IBM are among the companies scheduled to report earnings after the close.

Oil prices fall as US output rise outweighs crude stock falls

Oil prices slid on Friday, putting them on course for the biggest weekly falls since October, as a bounce-back in U.S. production outweighed ongoing declines in crude inventories. U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at $63.38 a barrel, down 57 cents from their last settlement. Oil prices fall as US output rise outweighs crude stock falls

Oil prices slid on Friday, putting them on course for the biggest weekly falls since October, as a bounce-back in U.S. production outweighed ongoing declines in crude inventories.

Brent crude futures were at $68.70 a barrel at 0949 GMT, down 61 cents from their last close. On Monday, they hit their highest since December 2014 at $70.37.

U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) crude futures were at $63.38 a barrel, down 57 cents from their last settlement. WTI marked a December-2014 peak of $64.89 a barrel on Tuesday.

The International Energy Agency (IEA), in its monthly report, said that global oil stocks have tightened substantially, aided by OPEC cuts, demand growth and Venezuelan production hitting near 30-year lows.

But it warned that rapidly increasing production in the United States could threaten market balancing.

“Explosive growth in the U.S. and substantial gains in Canada and Brazil will far outweigh potentially steep declines in Venezuela and Mexico,” the IEA said of 2018 production.

U.S. crude oil production stood at 9.75 million barrels per day (bpd) on Jan. 12, data from the Energy Information Administration showed.

U.S. demand for transport fuels such as gasoline for cars, diesel for buses and jet fuel for planes tends to rise significantly as families visit friends and relatives or go on vacation during the summer months. The so-called summer driving season officially started on the Memorial Day holiday at the start of this week.

“The start of the U.S. driving season … boosted confidence in the market that stockpiles would start to fall in coming weeks,” ANZ bank said on Tuesday.

Buy Qualcomm because the NXP acquisition benefit outweighs the Apple risk, JPMorgan says

Investors should buy Qualcomm shares because the financial benefit from the NXP acquisition will add significantly to earnings next year, according to JPMorgan, which upgraded its rating on the company to overweight from neutral.

Qualcomm licenses its wireless technology and manufactures mobile chipsets. It agreed to buy chipmaker NXP Semiconductors in October for about $38 billion.

The company is under pressure this year due to a royalty dispute with Apple. Qualcomm shares are down 12 percent year to date through Friday compared with the S&P 500’s 6 percent return.

“We believe that there remains plenty of headline risk from the ongoing dispute with Apple. However, we believe the shares are discounting a significant amount of this risk now,” analyst Rod Hall wrote in a note to clients Monday. “We believe there is material fundamental upside given the expected closure of the NXPI acquisition by the end of this year.”
