AirAsia is now serving its airplane food in a restaurant in Kuala Lumpur

The AirAsia commercial sign is seen in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on January 24, 2018.

Airline food has long been the butt of travelers’ jokes, but Malaysia’s AirAsia Group is seeking to turn that notion on its head — opening its first restaurant on Monday featuring dishes based on its in-flight menu.

AirAsia group CEO Tony Fernandes is so confident the carrier’s Southeast Asian fare will be popular with diners on the ground that he is aiming to franchise the concept internationally, with a New York outlet an ultimate goal.

“Our dream is to have one in Times Square,” he said.

The carrier, which pioneered the budget airline model in Asia — including charging extra for food — launched its flagship Santan and T&CO restaurant at a mall in Kuala Lumpur, marking its first foray into the retail food business.

General Manager of Santan Restaurant and T&CO Cafe, Catherine Goh, said 30% of the restaurant’s menu come from AirAsia’s existing in-flight menu, which includes classics such as Pak Nasser’s nasi lemak, a signature Malaysian rice dish with chili condiment.

The name “Santan,” already used on AirAsia’s in-flight menus, is taken from the coconut pulp milk that is a staple in Southeast Asian cooking.

Goh said a product development team of five chefs and culinary arts students took 9 months to come up with the rest of the menu.

“For example, they would meet with our Philippines colleagues, who will shortlist the best restaurants where they will try the dishes and try to replicate the flavours,” she told Reuters.

“Once they’ve developed the product they will send it to the Filipino team to get their feedback, whether it’s authentic enough.”

AirAsia plans to open five outlets this year, and 100 over the next three to five years.

“We decided to own several restaurants but the bigger business would be franchising, really, because we feel we want to harness young entrepreneurial talent around the region who would like to be part of this business,” said Aireen Omar, group president of AirAsia’s non-airline subsidiary RedBeat Ventures.

Aireen said AirAsia’s digital business, focused on e-commerce and lifestyle offerings, has the potential to overtake its airline business.

AirAsia embarked on a diversification drive to become an asset-light, digitally focused firm after the $1 billion sale of its leasing business in March 2018.

Its non-airline businesses include financial services BigPay, and travel and lifestyle arm AirAsia.com, which Fernandes said are targeted to be earnings positive in 2021 and next year, respectively.

McDonald's is testing a chicken sandwich

McDonald’s is entering the chicken sandwich wars.

The chain is testing a Crispy Chicken Sandwich in Houston and Knoxville, Tennessee. The sandwich features a fried chicken filet served on a buttery potato roll, topped with butter and pickles. A deluxe version also includes tomatoes, lettuce and mayo.

The chain on Sunday teased the test, which will run from Dec. 2 through Jan. 26, according to a McDonald’s spokesperson.

“Houston. Knoxville. Lunch tomorrow? No beef,” the fast-food giant tweeted.

McDonald’s franchisees have asked for a Southern-style chicken sandwich as Chick-fil-A’s threat to their business grows. The board of the National Owners Association, an independent franchisee group, wrote in an email in July that a chicken sandwich should be their top priority.

McDonald’s carries Chicken McNuggets and the McChicken sandwich. This fall, it debuted the Spicy BBQ Chicken Sandwich, a limited-time offer that launched to little fanfare. But the Chicago-based chain has not tested anything similar to Chick-fil-A’s chicken sandwich since 2018, when it tested the Ultimate Chicken Sandwich in more than 160 locations in Washington state.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International, has seen great success with its own take on the chicken sandwich. After selling out of the new item in a little more than two weeks in August, the sandwich returned in early November. Thanks to the launch of the sandwich, Popeyes had its best quarter in nearly two decades, reporting U.S. same-store sales growth of more than 10%.

Chick-fil-A’s chicken sandwich has helped the chain become the nation’s third-largest restaurant chain by sales, trailing only McDonald’s and Starbucks. McDonald’s has roughly 14,000 restaurants in the U.S., while Chick-fil-A operated 1,989 stand-alone restaurants and 363 “licensed units,” which are the nontraditional stadium, amusement park and university locations, by the end of 2018.

London named the most vegan-friendly city in the world

London has been named the world’s most vegan-friendly city, according to an annual ranking from an online restaurant guide.

The U.K. capital came top for a second year, in the rankings put together by HappyCow, which claims to be the largest vegan and vegetarian restaurant guide in the world, looking at options in more than 180 countries.

HappyCow’s top 10 rankings were determined by the number of vegan restaurants within a closely proximity and its overall impression of each city’s “vegan-friendliness.”

London currently has 152 vegan restaurants and it was the first city on HappyCow to have more than 100 completely vegan restaurants in 2017.

Specialist eateries in the capital include the world’s first vegan “chicken” shop, The Temple of Seitan, as well as the U.K.’s first vegan cheese shop La Fauxmagerie.

“Veganism continues to become a mainstream lifestyle in London, and this city takes veganism to a new level,” said Ken Spector, a spokesperson for HappyCow.

The number of vegans in the U.K. has quadrupled between 2014 and 2019, with around 600,000 Britons now on a plant-based diet, equivalent to more than 1% of the population, according to charity The Vegan Society.

New York came second on the list, with 111 restaurants in a five-mile radius of the city.

Bangkok, Thailand was the only city to be added to the rankings this year, coming in eighth. HappyCow counted 74 vegan restaurants in the city. Spector said that most restaurants have “solid vegan options” on the menu thanks to Bangkok’s “predominantly Buddhist background.”

HappyCow cited data from Google Trends, which showed interest in “veganism” increased sevenfold in the five years between 2014 and 2019.

Restaurants don't get the Black Friday boost you might expect. Here's why

Black Friday is still expected to be the busiest shopping day of the year. But restaurants don’t necessarily get a spending boost as consumers head out to snag deals.

The NPD Group analyzed receipts from a panel of 150,000 customers nationwide and found that last year the big traditional shopping days were not the highest restaurant volume days. In fact, Black Friday 2018 was only the 14th best restaurant day in the holiday period. The top restaurant day was Saturday, Nov. 17, the weekend before Thanksgiving.

“Everyone has this assumption that because Black Friday is a traditional big brick-and-mortar shopping day that it creates a big boom for restaurant traffic,” said David Portalatin, vice president and food industry advisor for the NPD Group. “I am certain that restaurants that are co-located in shopping malls or are very close to big retail destinations probably have a pretty good day on Black Friday. But it’s just not a big day for the restaurant industry as a whole.”

The dates analyzed by the market research company were Nov. 4, 2018, through Jan. 5, 2019, and include all restaurant categories.

NPD did find that December showed an increase in people eating out after they shopped or ran errands, but it’s likely they would have eaten out anyway during a normal weekend. Big shopping days like Thanksgiving and Black Friday are days when restaurants tend to not perform as well, relative to a typical Thursday or Friday, the group said.

The two worst days of the season for restaurant volume were Christmas Day and Thanksgiving Day.

“The vast majority of us are going to eat Thanksgiving dinner either in our home or in someone else’s home. And guess what happens the day after Thanksgiving? It’s leftovers time,” he said.

But it’s not all bad news for restaurants during the holiday season.

“Holiday is an opportunity for the restaurant space,” Portalatin said. “We find that 46% of consumers this year plan on giving gifts that are intangible gifts, or an experience of some kind, and that 45% of consumers plan on giving gift cards. The number one intangible or experiential gift they want to give is a food and beverage experience.”

Most of the major restaurant stocks have had an uneventful holiday season from early November through January over the past five years as well. The best performer has been Wendy’s, which has a market cap of $5 billion, up over 4%.

But while the stocks may not show it, Portalatin says those that serve beverages like coffee will likely see a boost.

“You are going to find that Starbucks is absolutely jam-packed because people are going to have a lot of beverage-only occasions between meals,” he said. “So you’ll likely find a very long line queued up there for coffee.”

American Express announces new reservation booking tool for Platinum and Centurion members

American Express is introducing a new reservation booking tool in the Amex mobile app. The new feature will allow Platinum® Card and Centurion members to search, book and manage reservations in one streamlined mobile experience.

According to Amex, dining is the number-one request through the Platinum concierge and a top spending category for cardholders. As a result, the company has been rolling out numerous dining initiatives, such as the ongoing expansion of the Global Dining Collection and recent acquisitions of Resy, Pocket Concierge and Cake Technologies.

“Knowing how integrated digital is in our card members’ lives, we’re excited to provide our Platinum Card members access to reservations at more than 10,000 restaurants through this new capability in our mobile app. Our card members love to dine out and we’re constantly looking for new ways to connect them with restaurants they love, whether in their local city or across the globe,” Chris Cracchiolo, SVP of global loyalty and benefits at American Express tells CNBC Select.

This new reservation booking tool is now available to a portion of Platinum Card® members and will be available to the broader Business Platinum®, Platinum® and Centurion card members in early 2020.

Eligible cardholders can access reservations at over 10,000 restaurants worldwide from the Global Dining Collection, Resy platform, BookTable and SevenRooms. Participating restaurants include Gramercy Tavern (New York), STK (Los Angeles) and Chiltern Firehouse (London).

Card members can make multiple bookings per day, but will not be able to make multiple bookings at the same restaurant for the same day within the Amex mobile app. If you want to book additional reservations at the same restaurant, contact the Platinum Concierge via phone or mobile chat for assistance.

When you dine at a restaurant booked through this tool, you’re not required to pay with your American Express card. Some restaurants may require a credit card to hold the reservation, and you’ll be prompted to opt into linking your American Express card to the reservation.

McDonald's workers file lawsuit to address workplace violence

Seventeen Chicago McDonald’s workers are suing the company, alleging that the fast-food chain has failed to address violence in the workplace.

In May, McDonald’s workers filed a complaint with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, asking the agency to investigate a pattern of violence in the restaurants. In the company’s home city of Chicago, on an average day, 911 receives more than 20 calls from McDonald’s restaurants, according to the lawsuit.

The suit argues that McDonald’s, in its capacity as a landlord, has failed to design its stores to minimize violence. For example, as part of its nationwide remodeling project that includes installing self-order kiosks and digital menu boards, many locations now have split counters. The counters’ wide openings and lowered height mean that it is easier for customers to walk behind or jump on top of the counter and confront employees.

The lawsuit also alleges that McDonald’s has failed to provide proper training to employees for how to handle conflict in its restaurants. In August, McDonald’s announced new training for supervisors and employees, but the plaintiffs said that they have not yet received training.

The lawsuit is seeking an injunction, which would mean putting a halt to McDonald’s pricey renovations, which have cost the company and its franchisees billions of dollars. About two-thirds of McDonald’s U.S. locations have been renovated, according to Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

A Burger King franchisee made a discounting error that cost it millions, but analyst says buy the stock

Burger King’s largest U.S. franchisee made a “one-time” discounting error that cost it millions, but Craig-Hallum Capital Group recommends buying its stock as the buzz continues for the Impossible Whopper and Popeyes’ chicken sandwich.

Craig-Hallum Capital Group analyst Jeremy Hamblin wrote in a note Wednesday that the stock of Carrols Restaurant Group, which has a market value of $394 million, is trading “almost like it’s going out of business.”

The stock closed Wednesday up 2.8% at $7.60 per share. But the name has fallen 23% so far this year. For comparison, Restaurant Brands International, the parent company of Burger King, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen and Tim Hortons, is up 26% in 2019.

Hamblin wrote that Carrols has suffered from “self-inflicted wounds,” like an accidental double discount on Whopper value meals from June to August. The mistake decreased its sales by $12.4 million and its earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization by $10.9 million.

The discounting error also impacted the overall same-store sales sales of Burger King.

Carrols corrected the discounting mistake in late August. CEO Dan Accordino told analysts on the conference call earlier in November that it was a “one-time error” after disclosing the mistake.

Carrols operates more than 1,000 Burger King restaurants and 60 Popeyes locations, as of Sept. 29.

In April, Carrols acquired Cambridge Holdings. Hamblin said that he sees “opportunity in spades” for Carrols to improve Cambridge restaurants’ profitability.

Hamblin also said that Carrols is benefiting from the strength of Burger King’s and Popeyes’ brands. The Impossible Whopper and Popeyes’ chicken sandwich are drawing both new and old customers to restaurants. In October, the chains’ parent company reported that both Burger King and Popeyes had their strongest quarterly same-store sales in years.

“It doesn’t hurt that [Wendy’s] is focused on its breakfast launch while [McDonald’s] is coping with an unexpected CEO transition,” Hamblin wrote.

— CNBC’s Michael Bloom contributed to this report.

Why White Castle isn't a fast-food giant

If you’ve ever eaten a hamburger at a fast-food restaurant, White Castle deserves at least some of the credit.

The Columbus, Ohio-based chain is famous for its cheap, small burgers. It’s also widely regarded as the first fast-food hamburger chain in the United States.

White Castle started in 1921 in Wichita, Kansas — decades before competitors McDonald’s or Restaurant Brands International’s Burger King arrived on the scene. White Castle laid the groundwork for those chains, and it played a key role in making the hamburger synonymous with American cuisine.

McDonald’s and Burger King grew quickly, from regional, to national, to international chains in a matter of decades. White Castle, on the other hand, stayed small. Today, there are about 370 White Castle restaurants in 13 states.

Throughout its nearly 100-year history, White Castle has been opposed to franchising its business, a mechanism that fueled other fast-food companies’ growth.

CEO Lisa Ingram is the fourth generation of her family to run the chain. She acknowledged that other business models would have led to faster growth.

“But you have to give up control and you have to give up the ownership of the customer and the ownership of the team member,” she said. “And that’s just not something that we have ever really been interested in doing.”

White Castle is testing the waters outside its Midwest and Northeast stronghold, with restaurants in Nevada, Arizona and China. The restaurants in Nevada are licensed, but White Castle said that won’t be its model for future growth.

“We still keep coming back to [the fact] that this model has worked well for us for almost 100 years and that we believe it’s a good model for us to continue into the future,” Ingram said.
