Look out Chick-fil-A and Popeyes, McDonald's new chicken sandwich is 'really good,' analyst says

Chick-fil-A and Popeye’s are about to get some new, crispy competition.

Fast-food restaurant chain McDonald’s is expected to launch a crispy chicken sandwich in the beginning of next year and Telsey Advisory Group said its going to be a “big U.S. hit for the chain.”

“We believe MCD’s new Crispy Chicken Sandwich and Biscuit will usher in a successful new U.S. lineup of better-quality chicken in 2020 and 2021,” said Bob Derrington, Managing Director and Senior Research Analyst at the Telsey Advisory Group in a note to clients on Thursday.

The U.S. chicken marketplace has grown more than 14% this year to about $4.5 million sales per store, according to the firm. Chick-fil-A, Popeye’s and Wendy’s have achieved great success from the popularity of their chicken sandwiches. The so-called “chicken wars” have put pressure on McDonald’s to find a competitive chicken option for the fast-food chain.

“We believe MCD’s new Crispy Chicken product is almost ‘ready for primetime’ and successfully face-off against its major nemesis Chick-fil-A,” said Derrington, who tried a trial of the sandwich last week in Tennessee. “MCD’s New Crispy Chicken Sandwich Tastes Really Good!,” he added.

After trying a test of McDonald’s crispy chicken sandwich, here’s what the analyst concluded:

The new Crispy Chicken breasts were lightly battered, juicier and more flavorful, and in our view a terrific upgrade from MCD’s more heavily battered, less juicy Buttermilk Crispy Chicken.

McDonald’s Crispy Chicken includes a full muscle chicken breast, lightly breaded with a sweet fried flour coating.

The Crispy Chicken sandwich is served on a lightly buttered and toasted premium Brioche potato bun and topped with two crinkle-cut pickle chips.

Derrington said no matter how good the sandwich is, its up to McDonald’s marketing team and to convince consumers to buy it and operations team in store to execute and deliver a strong product experience.

McDonald’s base crispy chicken sandwich was “priced aggressively” at only $3.49, while Chick-fil-A’s sandwich is priced at $3.79. Both of Popeye’s sandwiches retail for $3.99, Derrington noted.

Telsey Advisory Group has an outpeform rating on McDonald’s, as well as Wendy’s and Jack in the Box. The firm has a neutral rating on Yum! Brands, Domino’s Pizza and Restaurant Brands.

Shares of McDonald’s are up nearly 10% this year.

McDonald's is testing a chicken sandwich

McDonald’s is entering the chicken sandwich wars.

The chain is testing a Crispy Chicken Sandwich in Houston and Knoxville, Tennessee. The sandwich features a fried chicken filet served on a buttery potato roll, topped with butter and pickles. A deluxe version also includes tomatoes, lettuce and mayo.

The chain on Sunday teased the test, which will run from Dec. 2 through Jan. 26, according to a McDonald’s spokesperson.

“Houston. Knoxville. Lunch tomorrow? No beef,” the fast-food giant tweeted.

McDonald’s franchisees have asked for a Southern-style chicken sandwich as Chick-fil-A’s threat to their business grows. The board of the National Owners Association, an independent franchisee group, wrote in an email in July that a chicken sandwich should be their top priority.

McDonald’s carries Chicken McNuggets and the McChicken sandwich. This fall, it debuted the Spicy BBQ Chicken Sandwich, a limited-time offer that launched to little fanfare. But the Chicago-based chain has not tested anything similar to Chick-fil-A’s chicken sandwich since 2018, when it tested the Ultimate Chicken Sandwich in more than 160 locations in Washington state.

Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International, has seen great success with its own take on the chicken sandwich. After selling out of the new item in a little more than two weeks in August, the sandwich returned in early November. Thanks to the launch of the sandwich, Popeyes had its best quarter in nearly two decades, reporting U.S. same-store sales growth of more than 10%.

Chick-fil-A’s chicken sandwich has helped the chain become the nation’s third-largest restaurant chain by sales, trailing only McDonald’s and Starbucks. McDonald’s has roughly 14,000 restaurants in the U.S., while Chick-fil-A operated 1,989 stand-alone restaurants and 363 “licensed units,” which are the nontraditional stadium, amusement park and university locations, by the end of 2018.

Forget the turkey sandwich — try these creative, cost-effective Thanksgiving leftovers instead

If you’re anything like me, by the Saturday after Thanksgiving you can’t stomach the thought of another turkey sandwich. But rather than wasting food or blowing my budget on takeout, for the last few years I have repurposed my leftovers to get the most out of my fall feast. I still spend a pretty penny pulling the big day together, but turning the leftovers into other tasty meals makes the expense easier to swallow.

Thanksgiving fritters

I can’t claim credit for coming up with this idea — I first had this kind of fritter at AJ’s Compact Turkey Dinner at Comet Café in Milwaukee, Wisconsin — but it’s one of my absolute favorite uses of Thanksgiving food. I combine mashed potatoes, stuffing, and diced turkey until well mixed, and form the mixture into large balls. Because I live in Milwaukee, we coat everything in beer batter, but you could just as easily coat the balls in an egg wash and breadcrumbs. I fry the balls in a deep skillet and dip them in leftover gravy or cranberry sauce.

Macaroni and cheese fritters

Macaroni and cheese rarely makes its way onto my Thanksgiving table, but it is a staple for millions of families. I also seldom repurpose it because I just eat it cold while standing in front of the open refrigerator. But it does make great fritters — the concept is similar to arancini (fried risotto balls). I find it helpful to briefly freeze the balls of macaroni before breading and frying them. This helps the pasta stay together in the hot oil. And because I am living my best Midwest life, I always serve them with a side of ranch.

Soup

With days getting shorter and temperatures dropping, few things are as satisfying as a good bowl of soup. I like to use leftover turkey in place of chicken in classic soups, and I am sure turkey would also work great in place of chicken in a white bean chili. But the most satisfying post-Thanksgiving soup I have made is Turkey Enchilada Verde Soup.

Pot pie

What could be more comforting on a cold fall night than a piping hot turkey pot pie? Not much, except maybe a turkey shepherd’s pie with a broiled mashed potato topping. Pot pie and shepherd’s pie are great vehicles for using up leftover vegetables like extra green beans or Brussels sprouts.

Tacos and enchiladas

I grew up in Texas, and post-Thanksgiving turkey tacos were an annual tradition in my family. I always have taco seasoning on hand from my favorite local spice shop, but any taco seasoning you like will transform bland turkey into delicious tacos in almost no time at all.

Any taco seasoning you like will transform bland turkey into delicious tacos in almost no time at all. Brooke Frizzell

When I have a little more time on my hands, enchiladas take the turkey to the next level. My first choice is a North Texas staple, sour cream chicken enchiladas made with turkey. I use a recipe from Lisa Fain’s original “Homesick Texan” book, but any enchilada recipe you like will work.

Breakfast

Man killed at Maryland Popeyes in fight linked to popular chicken sandwich

A man was stabbed to death outside a Maryland Popeyes in a fight over the chain’s popular fried chicken sandwich, police said.

A spokeswoman for the Prince George’s Police Department said the 28-year-old, who has not been identified, was killed at a restaurant in Oxon Hill, outside Washington D.C.

A fight began after someone cut in line, spokeswoman Jennifer Donelan said.

“For you to get that angry over anything — for that type of anger to develop into this type of violence, again is a very sad and tragic day,” Donelan said.

The fight began inside the restaurant and later moved outside, Donelan said. The man was rushed to a hospital where he later died.

Authorities did not identify a suspect.

Popeyes began selling the sandwich on Sunday after a two-month hiatus. First introduced in August, it sold out in just two weeks — a surge in popularity prompted by a viral feud with Chick-fil-A.

This summer, customers angry about the sandwich shortage threatened restaurant workers at a franchise in Texas. Another filed a lawsuit in Tennessee alleging “deceptive business practices.”

“We do not yet know whether this was the result of a dispute over one of our products or something unrelated, but there is no reason for someone to lose their life on a Monday night in a parking lot,” Popeyes said in a statement to NBC News. “Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends and we are fully cooperating with local authorities.”

Popeyes' chicken sandwich to return in November

Popeyes’ chicken sandwich will return to stores Nov. 3.

In August, the Restaurant Brands International chain sold out of its new chicken sandwich in a little more than two weeks. The supply was supposed to last until the end of September.

The sandwich was designed to help Popeyes compete with Chick-fil-A, the market leader in fast-food chicken. It will return on a Sunday — the day of the week that all Chick-fil-A locations are famously closed.

Popeyes’ plan worked a little too well the first time. Thanks to a Twitter spat with Chick-fil-A that went viral, Popeyes sold as many as 1,000 sandwiches per day, according to estimates from KeyBanc Capital Markets. Customers who wanted to compare the new sandwich to Chick-fil-A’s classic chicken sandwich reported long lines inside restaurants and at the drive-thru.

Those who didn’t manage to get a Popeyes’ sandwich instead went to Chick-fil-A to fulfill their craving, according to a report from Gravy Analytics.

Gravy Analytics, a Dulles, Virginia-based firm, used anonymous location mobile data to analyze foot traffic. It found that fast-food chicken restaurants as a whole did not experience more traffic when Popeyes’ locations were contending with 30-minute long lines.

When both Popeyes and Chick-fil-A were experiencing a traffic bump, they were stealing customers from other similar restaurants. For example, Yum Brands’ KFC saw its average daily foot traffic decline 12% between Aug. 12 to Aug. 31 compared with July 22 to Aug. 11, according to Gravy Analytics data.

To prepare for consumer demand of the chicken sandwich, one Popeyes franchisee is planning on hiring 400 more employees, according to a Bloomberg report.

Thanks to the launch of the sandwich, Popeyes had its best quarter in nearly two decades, reporting U.S. same-store sales growth of more than 10%. Its parent company reported its third-quarter results on Monday,

Dunkin' accelerates nationwide launch of Beyond Meat

Dunkin’ is moving up the date of its nationwide launch of its Beyond Sausage sandwich after successful tests in Manhattan.

The chain started testing the breakfast sandwich made with plant-based sausage from Beyond Meat in July in Manhattan locations. Initially, Dunkin’ was planning on rolling out the menu item nationwide in January. Now, it’s launching Nov. 6.

The Beyond Sausage sandwich, which comes with egg and cheese, was the number two selling sandwich in Manhattan locations, lagging behind only the bacon, egg and cheese bagel, the company said Monday. Sales were more than double Dunkin’s original forecast, and customers were buying it during all times of the day — not just typical breakfast hours.

Dunkin’ is looking to replicate that success across the country with the permanent menu item. But nationwide launches of Beyond products do not guarantee that the item will be on menus forever. Tim Hortons, the Canadian coffee chain owned by Restaurant Brands International, pulled Beyond’s sausages and burgers from its menu in every province except Ontario and British Columbia in September.

Shares of Dunkin’, which has a market value of $6.3 billion, are up 18% this year. The stock of rival Starbucks, valued at $103 billion, is up 33% in the same time period.

Popeyes sold an estimated 1,000 chicken sandwiches a day, doubling store traffic

The chicken in Popeye’s sandwich crunches audibly when you bite in, with all those nooks and crannies on the surface shattering into a thousand delicious pieces.

No wonder Popeyes ran out of its new chicken sandwich.

An analyst at KeyBanc Capital Markets estimates the fast-food chicken restaurant sold about 1,000 chicken sandwiches a day. Sandwich sales also accounted for about 30% of Popeyes sales in the time it was available while store traffic doubled, the analyst said, citing proprietary tracking data. For this reason, the firm is bullish on the parent company, Restaurant Brands International, and raised its earnings estimates.

The sales boom got its spark after a Twitter feud with Chick-fil-A in August led consumers to try the new sandwich. The chicken sandwich’s massive popularity also sent ripples through the fast-food industry as Popeyes same-store sales skyrocketed.

“Unbeknownst to [parent Restaurant Brands International] at the time, the launch of a new chicken sandwich at Popeye’s and subsequent twitter debate would be a viral sensation that would disrupt the fast food industry and likely shape the outcome of 3Q19 results for some of the category’s largest players,” analyst Eric Gonzalez said in a note.

Chicken sandwich wars: Popeyes and Chick-fil-A feud on Twitter in bid to boost sales

After a Twitter spat with Chick-fil-A over chicken sandwiches, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen walked away with a larger spike in its follower count — but that might not matter for its long-term sales.

Popeyes, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International, brought a chicken sandwich to its national menu for the first time last week. With pickles and a buttered bun, it looks a lot like a Chick-fil-A sandwich.

Chick-fil-A, the biggest chicken chain in the U.S. by sales, alluded to the new sandwich Monday in a tweet that said “Bun + Chicken + Pickles = all the [heart] for the original” about its own chicken sandwich.

Popeyes replied, asking the Atlanta-based company “… y’all good?”

Chick-fil-A did not respond, but other restaurant chains, like Wendy’s and Shake Shack, joined in to boast about their own chicken sandwiches. Social media users also chimed in to share their favorite fast-food chicken sandwich.

Popeyes started off with roughly a tenth of Chick-fil-A’s Twitter followers. The fried chicken chain had 107,229 followers as of Aug. 18, compared to Chick-fil-A’s 1,026,039, according to data from Thinknum. Popeyes received more likes and retweets than Chick-fil-A on its tweet and walked away with roughly 25,000 new followers as of Wednesday, Thinknum found. Chick-fil-A only added about 10,000 new followers as a result of its tweet.

New followers might not translate into new customers or a sales bump for either chain, however.

“In general, a follower is less valuable for a brand than a regular person or influencer,” Sean Spielberg, co-founder and CEO of Instascreener, a social media analytics firm that focuses on influencer marketing.

Spielberg said that brands tend to receive less engagement — fewer likes or comments when taking its number of followers into account — from its followers than a regular person or influencer, individuals or celebrities who can sway public opinion.

“More often than not, [follower count] is a vanity metric,” he said.

Still, the debate over the two sandwiches and subsequent media attention is helping drive some awareness and demand for the new sandwich. Leezandra, a 23 year old from Nashua, New Hampshire, said that she tried to get the sandwich after seeing the debate on Twitter, but her local store was sold out. She eats at both Chick-fil-A and Popeyes and tends to make her decision based on which is closer.

Leezandra’s local Popeyes is not the only location to run out.

“Many of our restaurants have seen a high demand for the sandwich, with guests excited to give it a try,” Popeyes spokeswoman Dara Schopp said in a statement. “A few restaurants have temporarily sold out of the sandwich, and we are working to make sure they receive more as soon as possible.”

It is too early to tell if the chicken sandwich will drive traffic to Popeyes in the long term and help its sales catch up to Chick-fil-A’s.

The average Chick-fil-A location rakes in more sales than a Popeyes store. In 2018, a franchised Chick-fil-A restaurant that was not in a mall raked in $5.7 million in sales on average, according to franchise disclosure documents. The average free-standing franchised Popeyes location saw annual sales of $1.5 million last year.

Popeyes is launching its first chicken sandwich nationwide to compete with Chick-fil-A

After nearly 50 years in business, Popeyes Louisiana Kitchen is finally bringing a chicken sandwich to its national menu.

The fried chicken chain, which is owned by Restaurant Brands International, will roll out the new menu item across its U.S. stores on Monday. Popeyes called it the chain’s biggest launch since 1989, when it introduced crawfish to its menu.

With pickles and a buttered bun, the sandwich resembles that of Chick-fil-A, the biggest chicken chain in the U.S. by sales.

McDonald’s U.S. franchisees said last month that the global fast-food chain needs its own take on Chick-fil-A’s signature chicken sandwich to compete with the fast-growing Southern chain. Privately held Chick-fil-A is now the nation’s third-largest restaurant chain by sales, according to Nation’s Restaurant News. Only McDonald’s and Starbucks see higher annual U.S. revenue.

In 2018, a franchised Chick-fil-A restaurant that was not in a mall raked in $5.7 million in sales on average, according to franchise disclosure documents. The average free-standing franchised Popeyes location saw annual sales of $1.5 million last year.

As Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A has expanded outside of its Southeast stronghold in recent years, it has attracted new customers with its waffle fries, Southern-style chicken sandwich and customer service. This year, Chick-fil-A ranked highest of all fast-food chains on the American Customer Satisfaction Index.

Popeyes has been trying to boost its same-store sales growth. Sales at restaurants open at least 12 months rose 1.6% in 2018. On Friday, the chicken chain reported same-store sales growth of 3% for its second quarter, after reporting same-store sales growth of less than 1% the previous quarter.

The company also is eyeing growth in China. It plans to open more than 1,500 locations over the next decade there. Burger King, which also is owned by Restaurant Brands, has been in China since 2005.

Stop complaining—it’s making you dumber. Here’s what successful people do instead

Stop complaining—it's making you dumber. Here's what successful people do instead

Airplanes, restaurants, the office…these are just a few of the worst places for spawning complainers. In the air, it comes from being strapped to a tiny seat next to strangers at 35,000 feet — plus delays, lost luggage and the toenail-clipper sitting next to you. In restaurants, being served by someone brings out the worst in most people: “The soup is too cold.” “Are you sure it’s vegan?” “What’s taking so long?” The real cesspool of constant complaining, however, is in the workplace, where whispers at the water cooler spread negativity like the plague.

Stress from negativity shrinks your brain

A 1996 Stanford study suggests it’s time to stop. Complaining, or even being complained to, for 30 minutes or more can physically damage the brain. Researchers used high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans and found “links between long-term stressful life experiences, long-term exposure to hormones produced during stress, and shrinking of the hippocampus,” the study’s authors wrote. (The hippocampus is the region of the brain involved in the formation of new memories and is also associated with learning and emotions.) The worst part is that the average person complains between 15 to 30 times a day, according to Will Bowen, best-selling author of “A Complaint-Free World.”

No whining in the workplace

I actually welcome complainers in the workplace — with one important caveat: The complaints need to be constructive. In other words, if you’re not bringing important issues — accompanied by a solution or additional insight — out in the open, then you’re just whining. Here are four ways to be a constructive complainer: 1. Package your complaint like a sandwich “Woe is me” has never won any friends. But positivity brings out the best in those around you. The complaint sandwich starts with a positive statement, followed by the complaint, and then closes with another positive statement. Here’s an example: “I’ve heard great things about your service and I’m excited to try it. But I’ve had a difficult time reaching my account manager for immediate solutions. I’d really like to continue using your services. Is there anything you can do to help?”
