Hurricane Irma wallops Miami, topples second crane, floods streets

Hurricane Irma’s intense wind and torrential rainfall have toppled cranes and flooded Miami’s streets. The National Weather service is also describing tornado risks.

A second construction crane has collapsed in downtown Miami, according to NBC 6 South Florida.

Earlier, a construction crane collapsed onto a high-rise building in Miami as wind from Hurricane Irma intensified across the city bringing significant flooding and storm surges.

The Associated Press reported that it wasn’t immediately clear whether the first collapse caused any injuries. Emergency personnel were unable to respond because of high winds, Miami-Dade County Director of Communications Mike Hernandez said.

The crane that fell was Biscayne Boulevard in the heart of downtown Miami.

In preparing for the storm, Miami city officials warned residents in the downtown area to take extra precautions, due to the 20 to 25 construction cranes towering over the streets.

Vice Chairman of Coastal Construction Dan Whiteman said he has 12 cranes in the Miami area, which are designed to spin like weather vanes to ensure stability, according to the Associated Press.

According to the National Weather Service “the tornado risk associated with Hurricane Irma will affect much of the Florida Peninsula today and tonight.”

Meteorologists at the weather service reported that the intense vertical wind shear critical to the forming of tornadoes is expanding northward, adding additional risk to life and property.

Brickell Avenue, an upscale business and residential district near Miami Beach, was already being flooded out Sunday as Irma’s fury rained down on the region.
