Ukraine presidential favorite Zelensky skips live TV debate – but it doesn't matter, experts say

The favorite to win Ukraine’s presidential election this weekend caused a stir on Sunday by skipping a live televised debate with incumbent Petro Poroshenko – but even that isn’t expect to damage his chances of winning the upcoming final round of voting.

Volodymyr Zelensky, a comedian and actor and the favorite to win a run-off round in the election this coming Sunday, had agreed to face the more seasoned politician and incumbent President Petro Poroshenko in a televised debate from Kiev’s Olympic Stadium but the pair had disagreed on a date.

That left Poroshenko to speak on his own for 45 minutes while standing next to an empty lectern for his political opponent. Zelensky had not said that he was going to attend the debate, instead agreeing to attend a televised debate on Friday, April 21.

It’s not the first bizarre episode in an election race that has enlivened Ukrainians who appear to have tired of the country’s old political guard.

Zelensky accepted Poroshenko’s invitation to hold debates with three conditions, one of them being that both candidates take live drug and alcohol tests to, as Zelenksy put it, “show the Ukrainian people that neither is an alcoholic or drug addict.”

Experts say Zelenksy’s “no-show” has not affected the likelihood that he will become president at a final run-off vote next on April 21.

“I still cannot see Poroshenko winning – he (Zelensky) is just too far ahead,” Timothy Ash, senior emerging markets strategist at Bluebay Asset Management, told CNBC on Monday. “Poroshenko’s negative ratings are just too high. He lost this election months ago,” Ash added.

Unsurprisingly, Poroshenko used his uninterrupted platform on Sunday to criticize an absent Zelensky and his apparent lack of concrete manifesto.

“If he hides from people again, if he is afraid, we will invite him again. We will invite him every day to every live show for the whole country to see who it is going to elect for the next five years,” Poroshenko told the audience Sunday, according to news reports.

Apple's stock falls, snapping a 9-day winning streak

Apple looks poised for 10 straight days of stock gains — Here’s what four experts say to watch 14 Hours Ago | 04:20

Apple’s stock just ended its nine-day winning streak.

Shares of the tech giant started Tuesday up 1% but the gains trailed off in afternoon trading, snapping a nine-day winning streak. The last time Apple posted nine straight days of gains was in September 2018. Still, the multi-day rally came after Apple’s celebrity-packed event on March 25 initially disappointed investors and Wall Street.

Apple unveiled three new subscription services two weeks ago, including a TV service, gaming bundle, and all-you-can-read magazine subscription. It also announced a credit card in partnership with Goldman Sachs. But the announcement underwhelmed analysts as the pricing of TV streaming is still up in the air and they expect limited reach of the Apple Card. Shares of Apple fell on the day of the unveil as well as the day after.

Now that the dust has settled, the focus has returned to Apple’s flagship product, the iPhone. While the tech giant has suffered from slowing demand for the smartphone, it still holds a leading position in the market, analysts said.

“After a turbulent few months, calm is being restored,” Wedbush tech analyst Daniel Ives said in a note on Tuesday. “With some recent price cuts demand trends are slowly turning around in this all-important region [China] for Cupertino.” Apple is headquartered in Cupertino, California.

Apple has slashed iPhone prices by 6% in China after the company posted lower-than-expected revenue for its fiscal first quarter in the region.

A recent survey of 8,000 teens by Piper Jaffray shows Apple’s place as the dominant device brand among teens “remains well intact,” analyst Michael Olson said in a note to investors Monday. The analyst reiterated his overweight rating on Apple shares with a $201 price target.

Shares of Apple fell 0.3% to $199.5 on Tuesday. The stock is up more than 26% in 2019, with its market cap climbing to $943.5 billion as of Tuesday.

Dow starts week with 80-point decline led by Boeing

Stocks fell on Monday as Wall Street digested strong gains from the previous week and looked ahead to the start of the corporate earnings season. Shares of Boeing and General Electric led the decline. Boeing dropped more than 4% after Bank of America Merrill Lynch cut its rating on the aerospace giant to neutral from buy. The bank said it expects production of the 737 Max jet to be delayed by six to nine months. This follows a deadly plane crash from last month that involved a 737 Max plane.

Dow starts week with 80-point decline led by Boeing

Stocks fell on Monday as Wall Street digested strong gains from the previous week and looked ahead to the start of the corporate earnings season.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average declined by 84 points. The S&P 500 eked out a 0.1% gain at 2,895.75, in danger of snapping a seven-day winning streak, as the industrial sector dipped 0.4%. The Nasdaq Composite ended Monday 0.2% higher.

“Equity trends remain steadfastly bullish but are now getting stretched, and have arrived at near-term areas where resistance could set in,” said Mark Newton, managing member at Newton Advisors. “Momentum is nearing overbought territory yet again after one of the best quarters in over 20 years time, while the groups that have led this rally, namely technology, consumer discretionary and industrials, are now up to levels near prior highs which are thought to be important from a price perspective.”

The bank said it expects production of the 737 Max jet to be delayed by six to nine months. This follows a deadly plane crash from last month that involved a 737 Max plane.

GE, meanwhile, fell more than 5% after J.P. Morgan downgraded the stock, noting: “We believe many investors are underestimating the severity of the challenges and underlying risks at GE, while overestimating the value of small positives.”

Investors should take note of the downgrades analysts made on a collection of stocks, CNBC’s Jim Cramer said Monday.

Analysts made their calls on General Electric, Boeing, and Clorox, among others, which could signal what’s to come, he said. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed nearly 84 points on the day, while the S&P 500 rose 0.1% to extend a seven-day winning streak and the Nasdaq moved up 0.2%.

Because the market has had an “incredible” run, many of these downgrades seem to be warranted and action oriented, Cramer said.

“You know my mantra: bulls make money, bears make money, but hogs … they get slaughtered,” the “Mad Money” host said. “I don’t want to be too greedy and that rule has never gotten me in trouble, so we need to take these calls seriously. We always should focus on downgrades. They can be very meaningful.”

After jobs report, the bull narrative is winning the argument and could take market to new highs

New highs for stocks? The bull narrative is winning the argument, for now.

The S&P 500 is about 1.5% from an historic high, and recent data may help make a run at that record.

Friday’s nonfarm payroll report, with 196,000 new jobs in March, was above expectations and will go a long way toward quelling fears that U.S. jobs growth is slowing significantly after February’s 20,000 print (which has now been revised to up 33,000).

This will reinforce the bull narrative that has come to dominate trading in the past month. The bull narrative is: China and Europe economic weakness is bottoming, there will be a trade deal with little or very low tariffs, earnings growth in the U.S. for 2019 will be in the low-single digits, inflation will be moderate (around 2%), and — most importantly — the chances of a recession in 2020 is very low.

The bear narrative, that China and European economic data has been mixed and does not support claims of a bottom, and that the likelihood of a recession in 2020 is very high, has been losing ground.

You can see the dominance of the bull narrative in the trading action. Globally, China is again the big outperformer up 5% this week as the Shanghai Exchange hits a 52-week high:

Global markets this week:

Shanghai up 5.1%

STOXX 600 up 2.3%

Japan up 2.9%

S&P 500 up 1.6%

Once again, gainers for the week in the U.S. are all cyclicals like semiconductors and industrials, while laggards are defensive names like utilities and consumer staples.

Sector leaders this week:

Semiconductors (SMH) up 5.1%

Banks (KBE) up 4.5%

Industrials up 2.3%

Utilities down 1.2%

Consumer Staples down 1.3%

The Cboe Volatility Index (VIX) is sitting near the lows for the year, a sign traders are not worried about near-term volatility.

Bond yields have risen in the last week as traders have become more confident in the bull narrative.

However, the global slowdown story is not dead. Recent German data has been poor. Overnight, Samsung Electronics said it expects to post a 60% decline in first-quarter operating profit because memory-chip demand has faded. That drop in demand is widely blamed on global trade concerns and weaker smartphone sales that have left chipmakers with a large inventory.

After winning the top prize for the second consecutive year Singapore Airlines CEO, Mr. Goh Choon Phong said in a statement that he “wished to thank our customers for their ongoing support, as well as our staff from all around the world.”

Released Tuesday, Asian carriers dominated the top ten list with four of travelers’ favorite carriers coming from the region. Southwest Airlines won best North American airline and was the only U.S. carrier to make the global top ten.

Many well-known airlines, including British Airways, Virgin Atlantic and American Airlines, didn’t feature.

Within the North America category, Delta Airlines was named “Best Major Airline” while WestJet was named as Canada’s best airline and Air Canada was deemed to have the best Business Class.

TripAdvisor also recognized the winning airlines in four distinct service classes. First Class was taken out by Emirates, Qatar Airways won the Business Class segment, Air New Zealand won Premium Economy while Singapore Airlines was top for Economy.

TripAdvisor said the Travelers’ Choice award winners were based on the quality and quantity of flyer reviews and ratings for airlines published on the website from January to December last year.

Winning $768 million Powerball ticket sold in Wisconsin

A single ticket sold in Wisconsin matched all six numbers in the Wednesday night Powerball drawing to win the third-largest jackpot in U.S. lottery history. Due to strong ticket sales, the jackpot climbed to an estimated $768.4 million at the time of the drawing with a cash option of $477 million. Powerball said the winning numbers are 16, 20, 37, 44, 62 and the Powerball number is 12.

The $768.4 million is the third-largest behind the world record $1.586 billion Powerball jackpot shared by winners in California, Florida and Tennessee in January 2016, and the $1.537 billion Mega Millions jackpot won in South Carolina last October.

“It’s going to be a very green spring for our first Powerball jackpot winner of 2019,” David Barden, Powerball Product Group chairman and New Mexico Lottery CEO, said in a statement. “A jackpot of this size can make many dreams come true – not just for the winner, but for all Lottery beneficiaries and the lucky state of Wisconsin.”

Although the prize has grown steadily since the last jackpot winner on Dec. 26, the odds of matching the five white balls and single Powerball remain one in 292.2 million.

The $768.4 million estimated figure refers to the annuity option, paid over 29 years. Nearly all grand prize winners opt for the cash prize, which for Wednesday’s drawing would be an estimated $477 million. Both prize options are before taxes.

Seven tickets matched all five white balls, but missed matching the red Powerball in Wednesday’s drawing to win a $1 million prize. Those tickets were sold in Arizona, two in California, Indiana, Missouri, New Jersey and New York. Two other tickets, sold in Kansas and Minnesota, matched all five white balls and doubled the prize to $2 million, because the tickets included the Power Play option for an additional $1.

Powerball is played in 44 states, plus Washington, D.C., the U.S Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

A comedian could be about to win Ukraine's presidential election

Ukraine’s presidential election is to be held this weekend and an actor and comedian who played the country’s leader in a hit TV show is in with a good chance of winning, according to experts.

Volodymyr Zelensky leads public opinion polls in Ukraine ahead of the first round of voting on Sunday March 31. He’s ahead of rivals Yulia Tymoshenko and incumbent Petro Poroshenko in what has become a three-way race.

A newcomer to the political establishment in Ukraine, Zelensky’s nearest experience of national leadership is from playing the part of the Ukrainian president in popular TV show “Servant of the People,” which gained unexpected international popularity and was picked up by Netflix.

The latest opinion poll by BDM of around 5,000 people conducted last week showed anti-establishment candidate Zelensky ahead of the pack with 25.7 percent of the vote. Tymoshenko is seen in second place with 18.8 percent of the vote and Poroshenko with 12.7 percent.

Zelensky is expected to remain in the lead in the first round of voting but is not expected to get the absolute majority that would enable him to win the election outright. He is thus expected to face Poroshenko or Tymoshenko in the runoff on April 21. There is a record total of 39 candidates in the race, even after several of them withdrew their candidacy to support instead those in with a chance of winning.
